Building with Logic: Robotics Learning in July

July was an active month for the Robotics programme, with 1,364 students participating across 47 sessions. Through hands-on circuit-building activities, students were introduced to fundamental concepts in electronics, digital logic, switches, and display systems. Rather than learning these concepts only through theory, the sessions encouraged students to build, test, observe, and troubleshoot circuits themselves.

Understanding Logic Gates

A major focus during the month was digital logic and logic gates, which form the basic building blocks of many electronic and computing systems. Students explored AND, OR, and NOT gates and learned how these gates process inputs to produce specific outputs.

Through the AND gate, students understood that an output is activated only when all required input conditions are satisfied. The OR gate demonstrated how an output can be activated when at least one of the given inputs is active. With the NOT gate, students explored the concept of inversion, where the output becomes the opposite of the input. These activities helped students connect simple electronic circuits with the logic used in digital devices and computer systems.

Exploring Series and Parallel Connections

Students also experimented with series and parallel connections, learning how the arrangement of components affects the flow of electricity within a circuit. By creating and testing different configurations, they could observe how components behave when connected one after another compared with when they are connected across separate branches.

These activities helped build an understanding of current flow, circuit pathways, and the practical differences between series and parallel circuits, concepts that form an important foundation for more advanced electronics and robotics.

Bringing Circuits to Life with LEDs and Buzzers

The sessions also introduced students to basic output components through LED and buzzer circuits. Students learned how to power an LED and observe how electrical energy can be converted into light. They also explored how a buzzer can be incorporated into a circuit to produce sound, providing a simple introduction to how electronic systems can generate different forms of output.

By building these circuits themselves, students were able to understand the relationship between power supply, connections, input components, and outputs in a practical way.

Learning Through Switches and Inputs

Different types of switches were introduced as ways of controlling a circuit. Students worked with push-button switches, reset switches, and two-way switches, observing how opening and closing a circuit changes its operation.

These activities helped students understand the idea of input and control, a fundamental principle in robotics, where sensors, buttons, and other input devices provide information or instructions that determine what a system should do.

Introducing Seven-Segment Displays

Students were also introduced to seven-segment displays, which are commonly used to represent numbers and certain characters in electronic devices. They explored how individual segments can be powered in different combinations to create numerical displays.

This activity provided an engaging introduction to visual outputs and digital representation, while encouraging students to understand how multiple individual components can work together to create a recognisable result.

Learning by Building and Experimenting

Across the sessions, students repeatedly had opportunities to assemble circuits, test their connections, identify errors, and make adjustments. This practical approach helped develop not only their understanding of electronics and digital logic but also problem-solving, observation, logical thinking, and troubleshooting skills.

The July Robotics sessions therefore provided students with a strong foundation in how simple electronic components and logical systems work together—laying the groundwork for more complex robotics and technology-based learning in the future.
