Puducherry’s natural heritage extends beyond its historic buildings and cultural landmarks to include the distinctive ecosystems that have shaped its landscape. At Aurovanam, efforts to document local biodiversity, encourage environmental awareness and connect students with nature continue to bring this ecological heritage into focus.

Exploring Our Lost Eco-Heritage

As part of the Pondicherry Heritage Festival 2026, Aurovanam participated in the programme “Conserving and Restoring Our Lost Eco-Heritage,” held on 22 August 2026. The event explored the ecological heritage of Puducherry, with particular attention to its Tropical Dry Evergreen Forests (TDEF) — a distinctive ecosystem that has experienced significant loss over time.

The experiential learning session introduced students to the importance of biodiversity, ecological restoration and the relationship between a healthy environment and healthy communities. By encouraging students to explore these themes beyond the classroom, the programme offered an opportunity to understand why conserving natural ecosystems matters and how environmental restoration contributes to protecting the region’s ecological heritage.

The session also highlighted the importance of recognising and preserving the natural environments that form part of Puducherry’s identity. Connecting ecological conservation with the wider heritage festival helped bring attention to an often-overlooked aspect of heritage: the landscapes, plants and biodiversity that sustain our environment.

Documenting Puducherry’s Tropical Dry Evergreen Forests

Alongside its educational activities, documentation of the Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest (TDEF) varieties at Aurovanam is ongoing. Recording the varieties found at the site contributes to a better understanding of this distinctive forest ecosystem and supports efforts to recognise and preserve its ecological value.

Such documentation forms an important part of building awareness about local biodiversity. By paying closer attention to the plant varieties and ecological features present at Aurovanam, the work helps bring the region’s natural heritage into focus and reinforces the importance of conserving ecosystems that have become increasingly vulnerable.

Taking Environmental Learning Beyond the Classroom

Regular school visits continue at Aurovanam, providing students with opportunities to engage directly with the natural environment. These visits complement classroom learning by allowing children to observe their surroundings, develop curiosity about the living world and build a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and conservation.

Experiences in natural settings can encourage students to ask questions, notice ecological details and understand the importance of caring for the environment. Through continued engagement with schools, Aurovanam provides a space where environmental awareness can be nurtured through observation and experience.

By bringing together ecological documentation, experiential learning and regular school engagement, Aurovanam continues to connect people with Puducherry’s natural heritage. The work reflects a simple but important idea: conserving the environment begins with understanding and appreciating the natural world around us.
