Aside from the four French colonies that now comprise Puducherry, Chandernagore, situated along the picturesque Hooghly River in West Bengal, was also a French settlement in India. It was here where Sri Aurobindo sought refuge upon receiving information about the British government's plans to arrest him. Living in hiding, Sri Aurobindo spent his time in Chandernagore immersed in meditation and spiritual practice. It was during this period that he received a divine command to travel to Pondicherry, which he followed on March 31, 1910, departing from the Boraichanditola Ghat in Chandernagore.
