Transforming an environmental challenge into a source of livelihood requires practical skills, creativity and opportunities to bring locally made products to a wider audience. During August, the water hyacinth initiative focused on developing awareness of the craft, providing hands-on exposure and showcasing products that demonstrate how an abundant aquatic plant can be put to productive use.
A skill development training session on water hyacinth handicrafts was conducted for students of Shree Bharath Vidyashram, Oussudu, Puducherry. The training introduced students to the potential of water hyacinth as a raw material for handicraft production, helping them explore how a plant commonly associated with water-body challenges can be used creatively.
The classroom-based learning was complemented by a pond visit and water hyacinth harvesting exposure visit. This gave students an opportunity to understand where the raw material comes from and connect the craft-making process with its environmental context. By experiencing both the sourcing and the skill-development aspects of the initiative, students gained a broader perspective on the possibilities of converting natural resources into useful products.
Such exposure brings together environmental awareness and practical learning, helping students recognise how local materials can inspire creative applications and livelihood opportunities.
Water hyacinth handicrafts also reached a wider audience through the Made in Pond event, organised as part of the Pondicherry Heritage Festival 2026. The products were exhibited at the event, providing an opportunity to showcase the craftsmanship and demonstrate the value that can be created from water hyacinth.
Public exhibitions play an important role in introducing these products to potential customers and increasing awareness of alternative, locally made handicrafts. By presenting water hyacinth products in a heritage festival setting, the initiative connected a community-based livelihood effort with a broader platform celebrating local creativity and craftsmanship.
The initiative also introduced a water hyacinth keychain as a promotional product for paid visits to Aurovanam. This created another way to display and promote the craft through visitor engagement, allowing people visiting Aurovanam to encounter a product made from water hyacinth. The addition of a small, accessible item also expanded the range of products through which the initiative could introduce its work to visitors.
Together, the exhibition and the introduction of the keychain helped strengthen the visibility of water hyacinth handicrafts beyond the training setting, highlighting their potential as both creative products and a means of supporting sustainable livelihood initiatives.
