School kitchen gardens are creating opportunities for children to learn about nature through direct observation and participation. During August, kitchen garden activities combined sowing, practical demonstrations and awareness sessions to help students understand how food grows and why healthy soil and responsible gardening practices matter.
Sowing activities were completed at six schools across the month. The first set of activities took place at GPS Vambupet, Sinnatha Girls Government School and Immaculate Government Aided School, Reddiarpalayam, benefiting 60 students. Further sowing was completed at GHS Kodathur, GPS Ramanathapuram and GHS Veerampattinam.
Alongside the practical activities, students received orientation on setting up and maintaining kitchen gardens. Awareness sessions, supported by presentations, covered soil fertility, the importance of healthy soil, student participation, the benefits of kitchen gardening and common challenges, along with practical solutions. The activities encouraged children to connect with nature, develop environmental awareness, take responsibility for their surroundings and appreciate sustainable agricultural practices.
Learning extended to observing the science behind plant growth. Students explored seed germination and monitored plant development under different conditions, helping them understand the roles of sunlight, water and nutrients in healthy plant growth. To assess learning outcomes, pre- and post-session surveys were conducted to identify changes in students’ understanding of kitchen gardening.
A total of 67 students benefited from the kitchen garden awareness sessions.
Follow-up visits were also conducted at four schools to monitor the progress and maintenance of established gardens. At GGHS Veerampattinam and GMS Manapet, the team assessed garden development and provided guidance to support continued maintenance. A rain hose pipe was also installed at GMS Manapet to support the garden.
By combining hands-on gardening with observation and classroom learning, the initiative helps children understand the journey from seed to plant while nurturing curiosity, environmental responsibility and an appreciation for growing food sustainably.
