Six women artisans are now regularly crafting eco-friendly water hyacinth products at Kalanjiyam, Bahour, with their creations being marketed through Aura Experience Stores. This initiative not only generates sustainable livelihoods but also transforms an invasive aquatic weed into a meaningful economic and ecological opportunity.
As part of International Biodiversity Day celebrations on 22nd May 2025, a special demo session and project walkthrough was held for participants at Auro Vanam. Members of the Puducherry Biodiversity Council, Forest Department, and newly formed Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) were introduced to the journey of water hyacinth — from aquatic weed to handcrafted product.
The exposure session, themed “Aquatic Weeds: Challenges & Opportunities”, sparked valuable dialogue on restoration and reuse. This field engagement highlighted how local communities can be empowered through nature-based solutions that restore biodiversity and foster circular economies.
