Water Hyacinth continues to be an important initiative of Svarnim Puducherry, bringing together environmental conservation, skill development and livelihood creation. By transforming water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic plant, into useful and attractive handicraft products, the initiative demonstrates how an environmental challenge can be approached as an opportunity for sustainable production and women’s empowerment.

Through harvesting, processing, training and community outreach, the programme encourages the responsible use of water hyacinth while creating opportunities for women to develop practical skills, explore creative enterprise and generate income. These efforts also help raise awareness about the importance of protecting water bodies and promoting environmentally conscious livelihoods.

Preparing for the Festive Season

With the festive season approaching, dried water hyacinth stems were carefully stored for use in the production of handicraft items. Proper preparation and storage of raw materials are essential to ensure that the stems are available when required for making finished products.

The stored stems will support upcoming production activities, allowing artisans to prepare a range of handcrafted items in anticipation of seasonal demand. This preparation also helps maintain continuity in the production process, connecting the collection and processing of raw materials with the creative work of the women artisans.

Harvesting Water Hyacinth to Sustain Production

Water hyacinth harvesting continued to maintain an adequate supply of raw materials for training sessions and handicraft production. Regular harvesting helps ensure that the programme has the necessary stock to support ongoing skill development activities and the creation of finished products.

Water hyacinth can spread rapidly across water bodies, affecting aquatic ecosystems and interfering with their ecological balance. Its removal, when carried out appropriately, can contribute to water body management. By directing the harvested plant towards productive use, the initiative also demonstrates a practical approach to resource utilisation.

The collected stems undergo preparation before they can be used in handicraft making. This process connects environmental action with traditional craft techniques, creating a pathway through which a problematic plant can be converted into a valuable material for creative production and livelihood development.

Promoting Water Hyacinth Products at Shree Bharath Vidyaashram

The Svarnim Puducherry team participated in a sales expo at Shree Bharath Vidyaashram, showcasing handicraft products made from water hyacinth. The expo provided an opportunity to introduce these products to students, parents and the wider school community while highlighting the environmental and livelihood dimensions of the initiative.

As part of the event, students and parents were given awareness about water hyacinth and the importance of contributing to water body conservation. The discussions highlighted how the productive use of harvested water hyacinth can connect environmental responsibility with climate action and livelihood opportunities.

The interaction also helped communicate the value of choosing thoughtfully produced handicrafts and recognising the effort involved in transforming natural materials into finished products. By bringing the products into an educational setting, the initiative encouraged students and families to look beyond the finished items and understand the environmental and social purpose behind their creation.

Advanced Water Hyacinth Training for Women from Kochi

An Advanced Water Hyacinth Training Programme was conducted for 34 women from Kochi, facilitated through Jain University. The programme focused on strengthening handicraft-making skills, exploring creative product development and introducing sustainable livelihood opportunities through the productive use of water hyacinth.

The training provided a platform for participants to further develop their practical abilities and explore ways to transform the plant into useful and marketable products. By combining craft skills with creative thinking, the programme encouraged women to explore different possibilities for product design and develop greater confidence in working with water hyacinth as a raw material.

Beyond technical skill development, the programme highlighted the potential of handicraft production to support women-led livelihood initiatives. Developing the ability to create finished products can open opportunities for entrepreneurship, participation in local markets and the growth of small-scale enterprises. Such opportunities can help women apply their skills productively while exploring avenues for economic independence.

The training also reinforced the environmental purpose of the initiative. By demonstrating how an invasive aquatic plant can be used as a resource for handicraft production, the programme connected practical skill development with awareness of water body conservation and responsible resource utilisation.

Creating a Sustainable Connection Between Nature and Livelihoods

The month’s activities reflect the different stages of the Water Hyacinth initiative, from harvesting and storing raw materials to training artisans and introducing finished products to potential customers. Each stage contributes to a wider effort to connect environmental conservation with creative enterprise and community participation.

Through these continued efforts, Svarnim Puducherry seeks to demonstrate that environmental challenges can inspire practical and socially meaningful solutions. By supporting women’s skill development, encouraging public awareness and promoting products made from harvested water hyacinth, the initiative continues to explore ways in which ecological responsibility and sustainable livelihoods can grow together.

The programme’s larger aspiration is to create a cycle in which environmental awareness encourages action, action supports skill development, and these skills create opportunities for sustainable livelihoods—transforming water hyacinth from an environmental concern into a resource for creativity, empowerment and positive change.
