This marks a significant step forward in sustainable energy generation using organic waste, helping meet local energy needs while reducing environmental impact.Innovative Research in Aquatic Feedstock for BiogasThe team is also conducting focused research on biogas production from aquatic biomass, including invasive species like water hyacinth. The goal is to explore new, locally available feedstocks that promote circular economy models and environmental restoration.Solar Dryer Prototype DevelopmentWe’re currently fabricating and studying the efficiency of bed-type solar dryers—designed to dehydrate food sustainably using solar energy. The innovation focuses on improving affordability, drying efficiency, and preserving nutritional value, especially for use in rural and livelihood-based settings.Through each of these efforts, Auro Innovation Centre is not just solving technical challenges — it’s building climate-conscious solutions rooted in local needs and ecosystems.
Extensive field visits at Thengathittu Estuary and Mullodai Lagoon Posted on June 9, 2025June 9, 2025 by Divya Priya Extensive field visits were conducted at Thengathittu Estuary and Mullodai Lagoon to document aquatic biodiversity, resulting in the photographic identification of over 70 different fish species across both sites. In parallel, an initiative was undertaken to assess the circular economy potential of water hyacinth in Bahour, Pillayarkuppam, Uchimedu, and Manapet lakes. Fresh hyacinth samples were collected using 1m x 1m quadrants from the four corners of each lake, weighed, then dried for a week on the terrace of Kalanjiyam, Bahour. Post-drying weights were recorded to establish biomass data, which forms the basis for evaluating the feasibility of converting water hyacinth into biochar, biogas, and compost. Additional ecological observations were made at M. Pudukuppam Lagoon, Suba Uppalavaadi Lagoon, Keezh Parikkalpattu Lake, Bahour Lake, and Kumaramangalam fields, focusing on bird species and associated fauna. A comprehensive community survey was conducted to understand local perceptions of ecosystem services and environmental degradation. This survey covered more than 400 respondents across villages located in the periphery of Bahour Lake, providing valuable insights into how communities interact with and are impacted by the surrounding wetland ecosystem.
CHAMP – Building a Healthier Future Posted on June 9, 2025 by Divya Priya As part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing the health and resilience of children, the CHAMP team conducted BMI (Body Mass Index) analysis across our participating schools, ensuring early identification of health patterns and nutritional needs. These assessments play a vital role in shaping targeted wellness initiatives for the students. In an exciting step toward expanding the program’s reach, the team also visited the prestigious Arjuna Trophy Hockey Tournament. This visit wasn’t just about observing—it was a strategic move to foster ground-level networking, build alliances, and explore new avenues for integrating athletics and community-based health activities. CHAMP continues to evolve as a holistic approach to children’s well-being—combining data, movement, and meaningful partnerships for a stronger, healthier tomorrow.
Buzzing with Purpose: Beekeeping Workshop at Aurovanam Posted on June 3, 2025June 11, 2025 by Divya Priya Previous Next On 18th May 2025, Aurovanam—the heart of nature-based learning at Svarnim Puducherry—hosted a vibrant and hands-on Beekeeping Training to celebrate World Bee Day. Guided by bee expert Lazer Jean, participants discovered the intricate world of Apis Cerana and stingless bees, gaining essential knowledge about their care, ecological importance, and the role they play in sustaining biodiversity.Earlier this month, Aurovanam had welcomed two buzzing families—10,000 Apis Cerana and 15,000 stingless bees—who were gently transported in handcrafted hives and settled amidst our native flowering trees. This workshop marked the next chapter in that journey, offering a rare opportunity for students, nature lovers, and aspiring apiarists to learn directly from experts in an immersive natural setting. The session was inclusive and bilingual (English & Tamil), allowing participants of all backgrounds to join in. From understanding pollination to practical hive care, the training planted both knowledge and inspiration. Participants left with a renewed appreciation for pollinators and the critical need to protect them.Shiva, Aurovanam’s dedicated caretaker, completed the training and now steps confidently into his role as resident bee guardian, ensuring the well-being of our newest winged residents.Through initiatives like these, Aurovanam continues to foster ecological education, community engagement, and a deeper connection with the natural rhythms of life.
AuroVanam May Posted on June 3, 2025June 9, 2025 by Divya Priya This May, Aurovanam welcomed 113 visitors who immersed themselves in the unique biodiversity of the Pondicherry bioregion. From native TDEF (Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest) species to the flourishing seed bank, guests learned how Aurovanam works to revive, conserve, and reintroduce indigenous plant varieties—many of which have high medicinal and nutritional value. Our Seed Bank Program continues to empower farmers by providing native seeds free of cost in exchange for seed return, helping preserve genetic diversity and promote sustainable farming. The Kitchen Garden, abundant with nutrient-rich native greens, fruits, and vegetables, remained a point of fascination for visitors—especially varieties unfamiliar to many, yet deeply rooted in local traditions and wellness.Aurovanam also served as a peaceful forest campus for two batches of the Robotics Summer Camp, where students explored tech and nature in harmony. As part of International Biodiversity Day, participants from the event organized by the Pondicherry Department of Forests were given a guided nature walk through Aurovanam. They were introduced to various TDEF plants and their uses, deepening awareness of native ecology. In an exciting fusion of technology and ecology, the Robotics & DEL team installed an automatic borewell switch system, enhancing water and electricity conservation. And, as we prepared for our Beekeeping Workshop, a new honeybee box was installed—welcoming a fresh buzz to Aurovanam!Together, these efforts continue to establish Aurovanam as a sanctuary for biodiversity education, ecological restoration, and community learning.
