Kitchen gardens in schools provide students with opportunities to connect with nature, understand plant growth and develop practical environmental skills. Through the kitchen garden initiative, Svarnim Puducherry encourages students to take an active role in maintaining green spaces within their schools while learning the importance of caring for plants and their surroundings.

Monitoring Progress and Encouraging Student Participation

Follow-up visits were conducted across multiple schools to review the progress of established kitchen gardens and assess their current condition. During these visits, students were encouraged to share their experiences, observations and participation in maintaining the gardens. They reflected on the changes they had noticed since the gardens were established, discussed the challenges they encountered and identified areas that required additional attention.

These interactions provided an opportunity to understand how students engage with the gardens and the extent to which they participate in their upkeep. By encouraging students to observe changes, discuss their experiences and reflect on their responsibilities, the sessions helped strengthen their connection with the garden and foster a sense of ownership over the shared space.

Learning Garden Maintenance Through Practice

As part of the follow-up activities, kitchen garden maintenance sessions were conducted across six school gardens. The activities focused on assessing the condition of the gardens, identifying maintenance requirements and supporting their continued upkeep.

Students actively participated in weed-cleaning activities, gaining practical experience in basic gardening techniques. Through this hands-on involvement, they learned how regular weeding helps reduce competition for water, nutrients and sunlight, supporting healthier plant growth. The activity also encouraged them to understand that maintaining a garden requires consistent attention rather than occasional intervention.

By taking part in these tasks, students had the opportunity to translate their environmental learning into practical action. Working together to care for the plants also encouraged cooperation, discipline and shared responsibility for maintaining a healthy school environment.

Strengthening Ownership Through Follow-up Visits

Additional follow-up visits were conducted across seven schools to review the development of kitchen gardens and understand students’ experiences in maintaining them. Students shared their observations, described their involvement and discussed the difficulties they faced in caring for the gardens.

These discussions helped identify areas where further guidance and support may be needed. They also encouraged students to take greater initiative in maintaining the gardens and recognising their role in sustaining the initiative over time.

The follow-up process remains an important part of ensuring that school kitchen gardens continue to receive attention beyond their initial establishment. By combining observation, student interaction and practical maintenance, the initiative seeks to build lasting habits of environmental care and responsibility.

Environmental Monitoring: Air-Quality Assessment

Alongside the kitchen garden activities, environmental monitoring efforts included air-quality checks at 20 locations across the Puducherry region. The assessment helped document prevailing air-quality conditions and establish reference data for continued monitoring and future analysis.

Collecting observations across multiple locations contributes to a better understanding of local environmental conditions and provides a basis for tracking changes over time. Together with the kitchen garden initiative, these monitoring activities reflect Svarnim Puducherry’s broader commitment to environmental awareness, practical learning and informed action.

Growing a Culture of Environmental Responsibility

Through regular follow-up visits, hands-on gardening activities and environmental monitoring, the initiative continues to encourage students to engage actively with their surroundings. The kitchen gardens serve as living learning spaces where students can observe natural processes, practise essential maintenance skills and understand the value of consistent care.

By fostering participation and ownership, Svarnim Puducherry aims to make environmental responsibility a part of everyday school life, helping students develop habits that extend beyond the garden and into their communities.
